Come le altre, anche la ϝράτρα per gli Elei è un oracolo di Zeus Olimpio; in questo caso, il dio ordina di trattare lo straniero – e segretario – Patrias come fosse un eleo, quando sia vittima di una maledizione. Il protagonismo dell’ellanodica nella procedura di giustizia che viene stabilita e il ricorso alla punizione della frusta ambientano inoltre quella procedura (che dimostra anche una certa competenza ‘panellenica’ degli Elei) e il reato che deve punire nel santuario di Olimpia. Appare infine richiesta anche da un più rigoroso rispetto dello spazio a disposizione la nuova proposta di integrazione della lacuna all’inizio della linea 9.

Tabella; bronzo; 44 × 9 × 0,2-0,7 cm. Ricomposto. La tabella – provvista di due fori per l’affissione di cui resta conservato quello di sinistra, praticati precedentemente alla scrittura all’inizio e alla fine della quinta linea, e circondata da un bordino piuttosto spesso lievemente danneggiato nelle parti sinistra e inferiore – è costituita da un frammento principale e altri più piccoli, in cui si è scomposta durante il rinvenimento e la pulitura. Tra quelli, i due più grandi restituiscono una piccola sezione del lato inferiore e parte dell’angolo in basso a sinistra, che è il più danneggiato e l’unico contenente una lacuna importante, in grado di compromettere la comprensibilità del testo. Dove è conservato, esso è invece leggibile senza difficoltà, anche grazie al fatto che, nei punti in cui la tabella si è rotta, la rottura ha sostanzialmente ricalcato il margine delle lettere, tutte profondamente incise.

Scrittura

Struttura del testo: prosa epigrafica.
Impaginazione: accurata, aiutata da una lieve rigatura che assicura alle lettere, tutte profondamente incise, un ductus regolare e un’altezza pressoché identica, tranne nel caso di quelle tonde, lievemente più grandi e forse ottenute con l’aiuto di uno strumento meccanico. Il testo è privo di errori e in un solo caso non viene rispettata, nella divisione delle parole, la scansione sillabica, in corrispondenza del foro per l’affissione alla fine della l. 5.
Tecnica di scrittura: incisa, con solchi profondi.
Colore alfabeto: rosso.

Particolarità paleografiche: assenza di segni di interpunzione; le lettere tonde sono praticamente identiche fra loro e di taglia leggermente maggiore delle altre, forse ottenute con uno strumento meccanico. Nelle lettere discriminanti per la datazione prevalgono i tipi 2 e 3, mentre il solo pi è di tipo 1 (Minon, I.dial. éléennes, 274-280).
Andamento: progressivo.
Lingua: greco nord-occidentale, varietà di Elide
L’assenza dell’aspirazione, la presenza del digamma iniziale davanti a consonante (l. 1: ϝράτρα), che si spiega fors’anche con il conservatorismo della lingua ufficiale, e il rotacismo del sigma finale (l. 2: ρ; l. 3: ὂρ) sono caratteristiche che il dialetto eleo ha in comune con altri; sono invece tipicamente elei la condivisione delle desinenze plurali nei casi accusativo e dativo (acc. μναῖς … καθύταις, ll. 3-4), il fenomeno dello zetacismo, qui testimoniato senza eccezioni e, infine, la conservazione delle desinenze dell’ottativo tematico nei verba vocalia in /e/ (nonché, forse, di quelli in /a/, presumibilmente assimilati ai precedenti), dovuta probabilmente alla conservazione pressoché regolare dello iato -eo-.

Traduzione

Il pronunciamento per gli Elei. Patrias abbia fiducia, e la sua famiglia e i suoi beni. Se qualcuno lo maledicesse, si allontani, come (se maledicesse) un Eleo. Ma se non imponessero le ammende colui che detenga la più alta carica e i re, paghi dieci mine sacre a Zeus Olimpio ciascuno di coloro che non imponessero le ammende. Ma annunci l’ellanodica, e le altre ammende annunci la damiurghia: se non annunciasse, paghi il doppio al momento del rendiconto. Ma se qualcuno, punendolo, frustasse il responsabile, incorra nella multa di dieci mine, se lo frustasse con consapevolezza; e Patrias, il segretario, subisca lo stesso e desista, senza ammende. La tavola sia sacra a Olimpia.

I caratteri che possono presentare il problema sono riportati nella sottostante tabella, in cui si può immediatamente verificare il comportamento del browser in uso. Nel caso sfavorevole, infatti, nella seconda riga al posto della lettera apparirà unl'icona sempre uguale a significare l'incapacità di rappresentarla:

Le soluzioni che vi proponiamo sono le seguenti:

impiegare un browser che non presenti il problema (suggeriamo ad esempio IExplorer 11 o successivi per Windows; Safari per Mac);
installare nel vostro computer il font Cardo di David Perry. A tale scopo è necessario:
- scaricare il font Cardo da qui;
- installarlo nel vostro computer;
- spuntare la casella sottostante (la scelta sarà memorizzata per le sessioni successive).
