Paolo and Ugo Sereni

My name is Paolo Sereni. Born in Venice in 1927, and together with my family, I work in a clothing store in my mother’s name. In 1938, after the publication of the Racist Laws, my older brother Ugo and I were expelled from public school and forced to attend the Jewish School at Ponte Storto. As you can see in the exam register, our names, together with those of Errera Lea, Lombroso Dante, and other students are marked with the red writing: “belongs to the Jewish race”. In addition to this point, in the physical education section, for example, you can see the writing “exempt from military culture” this is because, as our teachers explained to us, we are considered enemies as Jews.  Our sister Elena was also let out of school because she was of Jewish race and then she was taken back because she was the daughter of a Christian mother and was baptized before October 16, 1938.
