Tales from the Empty School Desk: Documents and Memories in Augmented Reality

A Temporary Place of Memory at Benedetti – Tommaseo Lyceum

This project was born from the collaboration of the working group of the augmented reality platform Ricordare la Città with the Benedetti-Tommaseo Lyceum and Prof. Maria Teresa Sega (r-Esistenze Association), historian and author of the text “The Empty School Desk.”

The purpose of the project is to create a temporary place of memory in the Palazzo Martinengo location of the Benedetti-Tommaseo Lyceum.

In this place a corner of a school classroom of the Historical Lyceum has been set up, populated with period furniture, silhouettes representing students and professors, and a selection of copies of historical documents (registers, report cards, journals) from the Lyceum’s historical archive.

The place can be explored with the Remembering the City app, which will allow, through the smartphone camera, to bring to life the silhouettes of the people and objects that are part of the exhibit, telling a story for each of them.
