Calle Orto, Cannaregio 1215

From the testimony of Amalia Navarro:

We were all arrested on May 5, 1944: there were nine of us (the mother, my sister, my brother; my aunt, a cousin with his wife and two children, the youngest of eight days). At six in the morning of that terrible day (a Friday) we were still in bed, when we heard playing and knocking in an authoritarian way. I knew immediately that the time had come, and I tried to save my brother. (…) As soon as we got dressed, escorted by those four individuals, we went to the German command, where we underwent an interrogation. (…) after the interrogation we were taken to the prisons of Santa Maria Maggiore. I cannot describe the impression I felt when we heard those gates close behind us. While they took our fingerprints (like criminals) and invited us to sign the register of detainees, I felt like I was the protagonist of a movie, but unfortunately I understood the harsh reality….
