Romano Brussato (1914–1944)

Romano was born in Venice on August 1, 1914. His father died during the First World War, when he was just three years old, and consequently found himself a refugee with his family in Rimini.

In 1935, he was hired as a worker at the Light Leagues of Porto Marghera and after work, he participated in the local football championships, playing as a goalkeeper on the football team and also playing with the basketball team.

His passion, however, was the opera that he went to hear in the phoenix’s loggione and of which he possessed many libretti.

In 1936 he served in the military in Bolzano and in 1942 he was called to arms as a tanker in the Mazzini barracks in Bologna.

He was captured on September 9, 1943 by German troops and deported to the Fallingbostel camp, refusing to join the Italian Social Republic. He was transferred to other internment camps and died in Bergen-Belsen on 7 November 1944.

He is buried in the Italian Military Cemetery of Honour in Hamburg.

The stumbling stone dedicated to him was laid on January 20, 2017 in San Polo, 1154.
