Calle Maggiore, Cannaregio 1600 (Pia Cesana Mariani; Leo Mariani)

Leo Mariani and Pia Mariani are two personalities who lived through the catastrophic period of the Shoah.
Pia Mariani was twenty-one years old and the daughter of Vittorio Cesana and Lina Calimani.
She was married to Enrico Mariani. They were both born in Venice and had one son, Leo Mariani.
Enrico and Pia had a complicated and troubled life because Enrico was arrested and taken to the prison of Santa Maria Maggiore. When Pia learned of his arrest, she decided to go to the prison and ask to be reunited with her husband.
Pia was at the end of her pregnancy. On December 18, 1943, Leo Mariani was born at the Civil Hospital of Venice. Immediately after the birth, Leo and his mother were taken back to prison with Enrico.
The Mariani family was imprisoned in Fossoli and deported to Auschwitz on February 22, 1944.
Upon arrival, they were forced to separate. None of them survived.
