Cannaregio 1771

“Dear Turcato, I am here with my cousins: one is old and blind and the other is also very advanced in years; We’ve always loved each other, I don’t feel like abandoning them.”

With these words Gustavo Corinaldi refused the offer from his friend and leader of the Venetian Resistance Giuseppe Turcato who wanted to help him escape from the Jewish retirement house located in the ghetto of Venice. In doing so, Gustavo made it clear that he was aware of his destiny, but still preferred to be with his family and not abandon it, rather than save himself.

A few days after the laying of the stumbling block dedicated to him on January 22, 2018, the latter was removed with an act of vandalism; But fortunately, on the occasion of the new installations, which took place on January 28, 2019, the stone was relocated again to its original place. In memory and testimony of his tenacity and generosity, this stone will forever remain an indelible memory and a source of inspiration for future generations.
