La stele restituisce un decreto onorario ateniese del 327/6 a.C.; il suo pessimo stato di conservazione non permette di conoscere con certezza né l’identità dell’onorato, né le ragioni per cui Atene decise di tributargli degli onori, tra i quali risulta dal testo unicamente la concessione di una corona d'oro. Se tradizionalmente l’onorato è stato riconosciuto in Memnone, membro – variamente identificato – della famiglia del noto Memnone di Rodi, recentemente è stato proposto di individuarlo in Timonda, di cui Memnone di Rodi era lo zio paterno. Le ragioni per cui Atene decise di onorare Timonda sembrerebbero risiedere nel suo essersi speso presso Alessandro – da cui aveva ottenuto il perdono dopo la sua lunga militanza sul fronte persiano – a favore di mercenari e ambasciatori greci e ateniesi caduti prigionieri del Macedone all’indomani della morte di Dario III. Se così fosse il documento attesterebbe una forma di opposizione da parte di Atene a quella politica con cui il Macedone, insediando in Oriente i mercenari greci che aveva catturato e/o inglobato nelle file del proprio esercito, voleva evitare il rischio del ritorno in patria di masse di cittadini abituati a combattere.
