Monumento con dedica di Callimaco di Afidna

Riassunto (massimo 650 caratteri spazi inclusi)

L’iscrizione si compone di diversi frammenti, rinvenuti durante gli scavi condotti sull’acropoli di Atene tra il 1840 e il 1888: alcuni di tali frammenti provengono dal Perserschutt. Riuniti per la prima volta da Habbo Lolling nel 1891, tali frammenti risultavano parte di una colonna di stile ionico, sulla cui sommità si ergeva la statua di una divinità alata, verosimilmente una Nike.
Il testo, iscritto su due linee continue nelle uniche due scanalature della colonna, è un epigramma e consta di 5 esametri. Pur essendo estremamente lacunoso e perciò variamente integrato dagli studiosi, vi si legge la dedica dell’opera da parte di Callimaco di Afidna, polemarco ateniese morto a Maratona nel 490 a.C., secondo quanto riferisce Erodoto. La restituzione del nome dell’Ateniese, sulla base del demotico Ἀφιδναῖο[ς] della l. 1 e del termine πολέ]μαρχος della l. 3, porta a concludere che, se Callimaco cadde sul campo di battaglia a Maratona, la stesura della dedica è avvenuta in due momenti: quando Callimaco era ancora in vita (ll. 1-2) e dopo la sua morte (ll. 3-5).
Scritto in dialetto attico, il testo presenta come particolarità paleografiche, oltre al segno di interpunzione a tre punti alla fine di ciascun verso, l’impiego della lettera phi a barra orizzontale.

Supporto

Colonna; marmo bianco pentelico; e marmo pario (statua); h 200ca (468, con integrazioni), Ø 32 cm. Ricomposto. Il monumento ha conosciuto un primo restauro della sola colonna, con integrazioni in gesso lì dove erano presenti le lacune, per essere esposto al Museo Epigrafico. Dal 2010, restaurato una seconda volta e integrato con la statua, è conservato nel Museo dell’Acropoli.
