Il documento presenta l'epigramma dedicato dalla città di Atene ai caduti in guerra nella battaglia di Potidea. Ritrovata nel 1802 in prossimità del Ceramico, lungo il Demosion Sema, l'epigrafe doveva essere parte integrante di un monumento commemorativo (un polyandr(i)on). Il testo, sebbene frammentario, è databile con un buon margine di sicurezza al 432-431 a.C., dato confermato da un passo di Tucidide che riporta della morte in battaglia di 150 Ateniesi e del generale Callia. L’iscrizione rappresenta un importante esemplare per la riflessione sulle pratiche rituali per i caduti in guerra e sul sentire greco riguardo a motivi escatologici.

SupportoLastra; marmo pentelico; 87,7 × 31 × 1,7 cm. Frammentario, la lastra è composta da due frammenti ricongiunti. Il retro dell'epigrafe venne asportato in seguito al rinvenimento del documento per facilitarne il trasporto. Elementi significativi sono le linee visibili, tagli talvolta molto profondi che attraversano tutta la lunghezza del frammento. Il quadro epigrafico è levigato in superficie e caratterizzato da anathyrosis sul lato sinistro. Si noti il fenomeno di ossidazione a cui l'epigrafe è soggetta evidente nella colorazione dorato-grigiastra assunta dal marmo.

Ritrovamento
Febbraio del 1802. Il rinvenimento del frammento (a) avvenne in circostanze fortuite, durante la conduzione di scavi per l'intercettazione del Demosion Sema. Dibattito molto più ampio e acceso riguarda la personalità che scoprì tale epigrafe. Inizialmente alcuni studiosi associarono il ritrovamento a Fauvel, ma successivamente, sulla base dei resoconti del viaggio di Hobhouse in Grecia insieme a Lord Byron, si chiarì che la scoperta era avvenuta per mano di Lord Elgin.
Il rinvenimento del frammento inferiore destro (frammento b) avvenne nel 1935. Il frammento era stato reimpiegato in un'abitazione della Stoa di Mezzo ateniese.

  • Struttura del testo: metrica, epigramma costituito da sei distici elegiaci. Data la frammentarietà dell'iscrizione, è impossibile verificare il rapporto sillabazione-a capo. Le ipotesi di restituzione, tuttavia, permettono di presupporre una diretta corrispondenza tra scansione metrica e a capo.
  • Impaginazione: Στοιχηδόν: a. 2; l. 2,2 (cm). Il testo è distribuito su 13 linee. La prima riga (parzialmente conservata) mostra una maggiore rientranza a sinistra rispetto all'allineamento delle righe restanti. Escludendo la parte dell’iscrizione andata persa, sono visibili 28 caratteri per linea.
  • Tecnica di scrittura: incisa, inspessimento dei tratti a causa della scalpellatura nel caso di alcuni caratteri.
  • Colore alfabeto: azzurro chiaro.

Alcuni dei nemici hanno una tomba a loro volta, mentre altri che sono fuggiti
ripongono nelle mura la loro più sicura speranza di vita.
La città e il popolo di Eretteo rimpiangono già gli uomini,
i quali caddero in prima linea davanti a Potidea,

Alcuni browser (in particolare Chrome e versioni molto recenti di Firefox) non rendono correttamente un gruppo di caratteri presenti nel testo di alcune iscrizioni, per lo più arcaiche. I caratteri che possono presentare il problema sono riportati nella sottostante tabella, in cui si può immediatamente verificare il comportamento del browser in uso. Nel caso sfavorevole, infatti, nella seconda riga al posto della lettera apparirà unl'icona sempre uguale a significare l'incapacità di rappresentarla:

Le soluzioni che vi proponiamo sono le seguenti:

  • impiegare un browser che non presenti il problema (suggeriamo ad esempio IExplorer 11 o successivi per Windows; Safari per Mac);
  • installare nel vostro computer il font Cardo di David Perry. A tale scopo è necessario:
    • scaricare il font Cardo da qui;
    • installarlo nel vostro computer;
    • spuntare la casella sottostante (la scelta sarà memorizzata per le sessioni successive).
