Negli ultimi anni sono stati pubblicati numerosi studi relativi alla cd. stele dei Maratonomachi, rinvenuta nel 2000 nella villa di Erode Attico a Eua-Loukou, nel Peloponneso orientale. La stele, iscritta con il nome della tribù Eretteide, un epigramma costituito da due distici elegiaci, e una lista di nomi, dev'essere datata, su base paleografica, all'epoca della Guerre Persiane. Il documento è stato attribuito al polyandr(i)on dei Maratonomachi sul campo di battaglia, e datato più specificamente a ridosso del 490 (Spyropoulos, Steinhauer) o agli anni '70 (Culasso, Petrovic, Tentori Montalto). Nei miei precedenti contributi sul tema ho discusso tali interpretazioni, e suggerito una lettura più sfumata e storicamente contestualizzata della stele, che a mio avviso potrebbe testimoniare due diverse fasi della memoria della battaglia di Maratona. In altri termini, ho esplorato la possibilità che la stele fosse originariamente iscritta solo con il nome della tribù e l'elenco dei caduti, e che l'epigramma sia stato aggiunto qualche tempo dopo il 480/79 (anche se possibilmente dallo stesso lapicida).
In questo articolo discuto lo status quaestionis e confermo la mia interpretazione della stele come frutto dell'agglutinamento di due fasi memoriali diverse. La prima fase, riconducibile all'immediato dopoguerra, è espressa dall'elenco di nomi, con la sua peculiare configurazione che riproduce la disposizione 'sfalsata' della formazione oplitica e richiama il tema della difesa della polis, garantita dal 'muro di soldati' messo in campo a Maratona; mentre la seconda, collocabile dopo la Seconda Guerra Persiana, è espressa dall'epigramma, i cui contenuti appaiono coerenti con la riplasmazione di Maratona nella memoria civica ateniese alla luce degli eventi panellenici del 480/79.

SupportoStele, casualty list; marmo pentelico; 55,8 cm (superiore) - 57 (inferiore) × 68 cm × 28,5 (superiore) - 26,5 (inferiore) cm. Frammentario. Il kymation lesbio conservato sulla parte superiore del fianco sinistro ha un'altezza di circa 6,5 cm. Dalla lavorazione della pietra sulla facciata principale si evince che il kymation frontalmente doveva avere una altezza di 7,5 cm. La stele, mutila nella parte inferiore, conserva all'estremità superiore del fianco sinistro una parte del kymation lesbio che in origine la sormontava, e che è stato poi verosimilmente rimosso a causa della sua aggettanza in occasione del reimpiego della stele in una struttura tardo-antica (un forno per la calce). Il lato sinistro della stele presenta la superficie liscia originaria, mentre gli altri tre lati esibiscono una scanalatura, verosimilmente realizzata in occasione del 'rimontaggio' del polyandrion dei Maratonomachi all'interno della villa da parte di Erode Attico.

Ritrovamento
Grecia, Arcadia, Eua (Loukou), 1999. Il rinvenimento è avvenuto nel corso dell'indagine archeologica della villa di Erode Attico condotta da Th. e G. Spyropoulos, avviata dal primo alla fine degli anni '70. Sono stati rinvenuti anche altri due frammenti (nr. inv. 586 e 587), appartenenti ad una delle altre stele che verosimilmente componevano il polyandrion, e non alla stessa stele qui in esame (vd. commento).

Scrittura
  • Struttura del testo: prosimetro, epigramma costituito da una coppia di distici elegiaci preceduto da un'intestazione tribale (il nome della tribù Eretteide) e seguito da un elenco di nomi di caduti.
  • Impaginazione: l'iscrizione è triplice. Essa è costituita, dall'alto verso il basso, da: intestazione tribale, epigramma, elenco di caduti. Il nome della tribù Eretteide (l. 1) è inciso a caratteri più ampi e spaziati. Segue l'epigramma (due coppie di distici elegiaci, disposti su quattro linee di scrittura: ll. 2-5), inciso a caratteri più piccoli e ravvicinati, con una grafia meno accurata. La lista dei caduti sottostante (ll. 6-27) include 21 nomi, disposti secondo una peculiare configurazione grafica, definibile come 'stoichedon alternato' o 'sfalsato'.

  • Misura lettere: 0, 22 cm (l. 1); 0, 15 cm (ll. 2-5).
  • Interlinea: epigramma (ll. 2-5): 0,06-0,09 cm. L'epigramma a sua volta dista 1,7 cm sia dall'intestazione tribale che lo precede sia dall'elenco di nomi seguente.
  • Andamento: progressivo.
  • Lingua: attico, l'iscrizione è in alfabeto attico pre-euclideo.
    Si noti il raddoppiamento del sigma davanti al chi (ἔσσχατα, l. 1) e al tau (ἐσστεφάνο̄σαν, l. 4), frequente in iscrizioni attiche di V secolo. Compare ΧΣ per il nesso Ξ in δεχσάμενοι (l. 5) e nei nomi propri alle ll. 9, 11 e 14.

Alcuni browser (in particolare Chrome e versioni molto recenti di Firefox) non rendono correttamente un gruppo di caratteri presenti nel testo di alcune iscrizioni, per lo più arcaiche. I caratteri che possono presentare il problema sono riportati nella sottostante tabella, in cui si può immediatamente verificare il comportamento del browser in uso. Nel caso sfavorevole, infatti, nella seconda riga al posto della lettera apparirà unl'icona sempre uguale a significare l'incapacità di rappresentarla:

Le soluzioni che vi proponiamo sono le seguenti:

  • impiegare un browser che non presenti il problema (suggeriamo ad esempio IExplorer 11 o successivi per Windows; Safari per Mac);
  • installare nel vostro computer il font Cardo di David Perry. A tale scopo è necessario:
    • scaricare il font Cardo da qui;
    • installarlo nel vostro computer;
    • spuntare la casella sottostante (la scelta sarà memorizzata per le sessioni successive).
