TitleLa stele dei Megaresi caduti durante la seconda guerra persiana

La stele, databile su base paleografica all'età tardo-antica (IV-V secolo d.C.), appartiene a un monumento funerario per i caduti nelle Guerre Persiane (480/79), eretto nell’agora di Megara. Essa ospita una iscrizione costituita da tre parti: l’epigramma in distici elegiaci, inciso su nove linee, ciascuna corrispondente a un verso, è infatti racchiuso tra due porzioni di testo in prosa, un preambolo di tre righe (più una parola in sconfinamento di rigo) e una postilla di una riga. L'epigramma, che originariamente era costituito da dieci versi (l'omissione del v. 6 è infatti certa per ragioni metriche), è descritto nel preambolo come una re-incisione voluta dal sacerdote Elladio del componimento per i caduti Megaresi nella seconda guerra persiana, ormai deteriorato dal tempo, opera di Simonide. La postilla nota che fino al tempo di Elladio in onore dei caduti si celebrava il sacrificio di un toro.
I problemi di interpretazione storica posti dalla stele riguardano vari aspetti: la natura dell’epigramma, se si tratti della re-incisione dell’iscrizione sottostante, ormai illeggibile, oppure la riproduzione di un testo attinto da una raccolta letteraria o trasmesso dalla tradizione orale megarese; la natura del monumento (sia quello originario che quello tardo-antico), se si trattasse cioè di una tomba, di un cenotafio o di un war memorial di natura onorifica e non funeraria, e la sua eventuale connessione con un culto eroico; la cronologia dei sacrifici eroici per i caduti (enagismata), se praticati ininterrottamente sin da età post-persiana o introdotti all'epoca di Elladio (o in un'epoca intermedia).
Come che sia, la stele fornisce un esempio fondamentale di agglutinamento di fasi memoriali diverse nello stesso documento epigrafico. L’iscrizione è infatti di fondamentale importanza in rapporto al tema della memoria delle Guerre Persiane, sia nella cornice originaria di living memory dell’immediato dopoguerra, sia nel quadro della reincisione di epoca tarda, quando si rese nuovamente leggibile, nel principale spazio cittadino, un documento storico evidentemente ritenuto fondante per l’identità civica megarese anche a distanza di quasi un millennio. La distruzione del Peloponneso da parte dei Visigoti di Alarico alla fine del IV secolo d.C. costituisce una possibile occasione per il rinnovamento del paradigma anti-barbarico e la riaffermazione del valore civico-militare megarese attraverso il restauro del memoriale delle Guerre Persiane.

Copiata una prima volta nel ‘700 da Fourmont nelle sue schede di viaggio, e inserita dal Boeckh nel Corpus Inscriptionum Graecarum nel 1818, venne riscoperta a fine ‘800 murata nel lato nord-orientale della chiesa di Hagios Athanasios a Palaiochori, un villaggio a nord di Megara, da Wilhelm, al quale si deve una nuova, più precisa trascrizione con disegno.

Translation
Epigramma per gli eroi caduti nella guerra persiana e qui sepolti, rovinato dal tempo, il sacerdote Elladio lo fece iscrivere in onore dei sepolti e della città. L’autore fu Simonide.
Per la Grecia e per i Megaresi, desiderosi di far sorgere il giorno di libertà, accogliemmo un destino di morte, alcuni tra l’Eubea e il Pelio, dove sorge il tempio della sacra Artemide arciera, altri sul monte Micale, altri davanti a Salamina dopo aver distrutto l’Ares delle navi fenicie, altri ancora nella piana beotica, quanti ebbero il coraggio di alzare le mani contro uomini combattenti a cavallo. Per noi i concittadini compirono questo onore al centro di Megara, nella piazza affollata dei Nisei.
Fino ai nostri giorni la polis sacrifica un toro.
