Tra i monumenti della cosiddetta acropoli di Xanthos spicca la parte inferiore di un grande pilastro che originariamente sorreggeva una camera funeraria, su cui era collocata la statua del defunto. Sui lati del pilastro sono incise due iscrizioni in licio A e in licio B, entrambe in stato lacunoso, e un epigramma in greco di 12 linee (corrispondenti ad altrettanti versi (2 esametri, 2 pentametri, 2 distici elegiaci e 4 esametri). In esso si decantano le gesta del figlio di Arpago, straordinario combattente negli agoni sportivi e militari, rispettoso delle divinità e particolarmente devoto a Zeus. Il nome di questo dinasta, che si è preservato solo in parte, è solitamente ricostruito come Gergis e identificato con il Kheriga menzionato nelle iscrizioni licie. Il confronto con gli altri testi della stele, dove sono nominati personaggi come Dario II, Artaserse II, Tissaferne, Amorge e altri, permette di datare l'iscrizione alla fine del V secolo. L' epigramma è un'importante testimonianza dell'uso della lingua greca in Licia prima dell'epoca ellenistica. La scelta di esprimersi in lingua greca da parte di questa dinastia, che attraverso Arpago risaliva al potente Kuprlli, dimostra l'intenzione di affermare il proprio prestigio e la propria forza politica anche di fronte ad un pubblico greco o ellenizzato.

Object typeOther, pilastro funerario in calcare locale, inciso sui lati con iscrizioni in Licio A e Licio B, separate da un epigramma in greco; limestone; 170 × 404 × 150 cm, il pilastro è posto sopra una base monolitica di altezza pari a 127 cm. Fragmentary, del pilastro si conserva solo la parte inferiore. Alcuni frammenti del monumento e delle iscrizioni sono stati recuperati e sono adesso conservati al British Museum e al Museo Archeologico di Istanbul. Il pilastro sorreggeva una camera funeraria, decorata nei quattro lati da fregi esterni e coronata dalla statua del defunto su trono, come è stato possibile ricostruire dai frammenti che ci sono giunti.

1838. Charles Fellow individuò la stele nel suo primo viaggio in Turchia. In occasione del suo secondo viaggio, Fellow fece una copia della stele, che pubblicò nel 1841.
Turkey, Lycia, Xanthos (Kınık), la stele è collocata nella cosiddetta acropoli di Xanthos, non lontano dal teatro, nell'angolo nord-orientale dell'agorà romana.

Translation
Da quando il mare separò in due l’Europa dall’Asia,
nessuno dei Lici mai dedicò una stele siffatta
ai dodici dei nel santuario incontaminato dell’agorà,
di [vittorie] e di guerra questo (è) il ricordo imperituro.
Questi è [Gerg]is, figlio di Arpago, che in ogni modo
con le sue braccia nella lotta eccelse tra i Lici che al tempo erano nel vigore dell’età,
e devastate molte acropoli con (l’aiuto di) Atena, distruttrice di città,
diede parte del regno a quelli della sua stirpe.
Per ciò gli immortali gli accordarono la giusta ricompensa.
Sette opliti uccise in un giorno, uomini d’Arcadia
e a Zeus elevò più trofei di ogni altro mortale,
e con bellissime imprese ha incoronato la stirpe di Ka[.]ika
