Questa legge, incisa su una stele rinvenuta a Bodrum, l'antica Alicarnasso, fu approvata probabilmente nel secondo quarto del V secolo a.C. in una seduta comune di carattere straordinario (syllogos) dalle comunità di Alicarnassei e Salmacitei. Il ruolo dei primi pare tuttavia preminente, e traspare anche dalla presenza nel prescritto di prytanis e neopoios, che ritornano in coppia anche nelle iscrizioni alicarnassee di III secolo a.C., rispettivamente in qualità di presidente dell'assemblea mensile e di eponimo cittadino. Nel Lygdamis che con le due comunità approva la legge va riconosciuto l'omonimo personaggio che la tradizione biografica su Erodoto e Paniassi ricorda come tiranno di Alicarnasso.
La tradizione attribuisce ad Alicarnasso un'origine dorica, ma il documento è redatto in lingua ionica e in alfabeto ionico; inoltre, l'onomastica evidenzia una forte mescolanza greco-caria (e l'incidentale interessante presenza di un antroponimo iranico) tanto nella comunità di Alicarnasso che di Salmacis.
Con le sue disposizioni circa gli mnemones, il nomos costituisce un'importante e controversa testimonianza sul ruolo della documentazione di archivio in una polis di V secolo a.C. e sulla transizione da una cultura orale a una che assegna un ruolo più importante alla scrittura. Il contesto e le ragioni dell'approvazione e, in parte, lo stesso contenuto della legge restano però sfuggenti. È certo che essa intervenne in un momento di delicata ridefinizione degli assetti proprietari, limitando nel tempo (18 mesi) la possibilità di ricorrere ai giudici per rivendicare proprietà immobiliari contese: le sentenze dovevano essere emesse, in quella fase, sulla base della testimonianza di alcuni specifici mnemones; successivamente la proprietà dei beni sarà invece riconosciuta, dietro pronuncia soltanto di un giuramento liberatorio alla presenza della controparte, a quanti ne erano in possesso quando erano in carica quegli stessi mnemones. Il nomos è tutelato da una severa clausola di immodificabilità, dalla quale emerge il ruolo del dio Apollo, che è beneficiario del ricavato della vendita dei beni o della persona degli eventuali trasgressori e nel cui santuario dovrà essere pubblicata la stele.

Ricomposto, con integrazione in gesso delle parti mancanti e restituzione delle lettere perdute. La stele è attualmente spezzata a metà in senso verticale; la divisione ha comportato la perdita di 2-4 lettere al centro di ciascuna linea di scrittura. La metà sinistra presenta, nella parte alta, un foro che ha privato le linee 6-9 di circa 4-5 lettere. Per il resto, lo stato di conservazione è molto buono, tranne piccole perdite lungo i margini e gli spigoli. Un’iscrizione correva anche sul lato destro della pietra, almeno fino alla linea 16 del testo sulla fronte, ma è scarsamente conservata e mal leggibile (una trascrizione - a cura di G. Hirschfeld - è in GIBM IV.1, 54).

1749. Il testo fu trascritto per la prima volta da Lord Charlemont (la sua trascrizione è pubblicata da G. Hirschfeld in GIBM IV.1, 50), quando la stele era impiegata come soglia ed era ancora integra. Quando nel 1855, e di nuovo nel 1865, la trascrisse Ch. Th. Newton, la pietra era ormai divisa in due parti, utilizzate come stipiti di una finestra.

  • Impaginazione: la scrittura ha andamento regolare, è essenziale, priva di apici e in genere senza inclinazioni; copre tutto lo spazio disponibile. Le parole vengono spezzate, se necessario, senza tener conto delle sillabe.
  • Tecnica di scrittura: incisa.
  • Colore alfabeto: azzurro scuro.
  • Lettere particolari: mymy; nyny; omicronomicron; sigmasigma.
  • Particolarità paleografiche: omicron con punto al centro è uguale a theta: quello di theta era forse colorato (Tod, GHI, 37); probabilmente le lettere tonde erano eseguite con un compasso (Maunde Thompson 1887). Uso di sampi per il suono /ss/ (ll. 2, 6-7, 17).

Traduzione
Quanto segue deliberò il syllogos di Alicarnassei e Salmacitei, e con esso Lygdamis, nella piazza sacra il quinto giorno del mese di Hermaion, quando era pritane Leon figlio di Oassassis ed era neopoios Sa[rysso]llos figlio di Thekyilos. Che gli mnemones non trasmettano (la responsabilità su) terra e casa agli mnemones di cui è eponimo lo mnemon Apollonides figlio di Lygdamis e con lui Panamyes figlio di Kasbollis, e quando dei Salmacitei sono mnemones Megabates figlio di Aphyasis e Phormion figlio di Panyassis; se qualcuno voglia agire in giudizio su terra o casa, promuova l’azione entro diciotto mesi da quando ebbe luogo l’approvazione; che i giudici facciano giurare secondo la legge come avviene adesso; qualunque cosa gli mnemones sappiano, ciò abbia valore. Se invece qualcuno agisca in giudizio dopo questo periodo dei diciotto mesi, sia chiamato a giurare colui che possiede la terra o la casa, e i giudici facciano giurare dopo aver ricevuto un dodicesimo (di statere); che il giuramento abbia luogo alla presenza dell'attore; siano riconosciuti proprietari di terra e casa coloro che le avevano quando erano mnemones Apollonides e Panamyes, se non le hanno vendute in seguito. Nel caso sfavorevole, infatti, nella seconda riga al posto della lettera apparirà unl'icona sempre uguale a significare l'incapacità di rappresentarla:

Le soluzioni che vi proponiamo sono le seguenti:

  • impiegare un browser che non presenti il problema (suggeriamo ad esempio IExplorer 11 o successivi per Windows; Safari per Mac);
  • installare nel vostro computer il font Cardo di David Perry. A tale scopo è necessario:
    • scaricare il font Cardo da qui;
    • installarlo nel vostro computer;
