Nel corso della guerra condotta da Atene contro Anfipoli e le città della Penisola Calcidica negli anni sessanta del IV secolo, viene approvato dal Consiglio e dalla assemblea un decreto onorario per Menelao di Pelagonia, mercenario al servizio di Timoteo, il quale ha personalmente attestato l’impegno e i mezzi messi a disposizione per la guerra da parte del suo collaboratore. Il testo del decreto invita il Consiglio ad introdurre in assemblea Menelao, affinché quest’ultimo riceva lodi, onori e benefici aggiuntivi. Dovranno curarsi di lui anche gli strateghi che operano nella Penisola Calcidica. Tra gli onori accordati vi è l’invito nel pritaneo il giorno successivo all’approvazione del decreto. L’emendamento, mutilo, propone di attribuire a Menelao il titolo di benefattore, condiviso un tempo anche dagli avi. L’identificazione del personaggio con un principe di Lincestide e la sua collaborazione con Atene nella guerra contro Filippo II in Tracia negli anni cinquanta dello stesso secolo, come attestato da Demostene, getta maggior luce non solo sui rapporti tra la casata di Lincestide e gli Argeadi, ma anche tra la Macedonia ed Atene, in un periodo in cui gli interessi espansionistici delle due grandi potenze venivano a collidere nel settore dell’Egeo settentrionale.

Traduzione
Menelao di Pelagonia benefattore. Sotto l’arcontato di Caricleide, nella sesta pritania della tribù Oineide. Hanno deliberato il Consiglio e l’Assemblea. La tribù Oineide era alla pritania, Nicostrato era segretario, Caricle di Leuconoe presiedeva; Satiro propose: poiché lo stratego Timoteo dimostra che Menelao di Pelagonia ha partecipato lui stesso alla guerra e ha fornito denaro per la guerra contro i Calcidesi e contro Anfipoli, sia votato dal Consiglio che lo si introduca al cospetto del popolo alla prima assemblea e che si comunichi al popolo il parere del Consiglio. Lo si lodi in quanto è un uomo valente e si adopera, per quanto è possibile, per il bene del popolo ateniese. Si curino di lui anche gli strateghi che operano in Macedonia, affinché, se ha bisogno di qualcosa, la ottenga. Sia possibile per lui ottenere da parte del popolo anche ogni altro beneficio. Si inviti Menelao nel pritaneo per [domani]. [Satiro] propose: le altre cose come ha stabilito il Consiglio. Ma poiché anche gli antenati di Menelao [furono benefattori] del popolo di Atene, [anche Menelao sia benefattore]…

Alcuni browser (in particolare Chrome e versioni molto recenti di Firefox) non rendono correttamente un gruppo di caratteri presenti nel testo di alcune iscrizioni, per lo più arcaiche. I caratteri che possono presentare il problema sono riportati nella sottostante tabella, in cui si può immediatamente verificare il comportamento del browser in uso. Nel caso sfavorevole, infatti, nella seconda riga al posto della lettera apparirà unl'icona sempre uguale a significare l'incapacità di rappresentarla:

Le soluzioni che vi proponiamo sono le seguenti:

  • impiegare un browser che non presenti il problema (suggeriamo ad esempio IExplorer 11 o successivi per Windows; Safari per Mac);
  • installare nel vostro computer il font Cardo di David Perry. A tale scopo è necessario:
    • scaricare il font Cardo da qui;
    • installarlo nel vostro computer;
    • spuntare la casella sottostante (la scelta sarà memorizzata per le sessioni successive).
