L'iscrizione, rinvenuta nei primi anni dello scorso secolo tra le rovine della città cretese di Tilisso e proveniente dal muro di cinta di un santuario dedicato ad Artemide, restituisce il testo di un trattato di alleanza tra le città cretesi di Cnosso e Tilisso – probabilmente stipulato a seguito di una controversia – nel quale Argo pare ricoprire ruolo di mediatrice, la cui datazione oscilla tra il 460 e il 450 a.C. Il testo, in alfabeto argivo e disposto su tre colonne, delle quali solamente la colonna centrale (B) è integra, mentre quelle laterali (A, C) sono mutile, contiene una serie di clausole riguardanti sacrifici in comune e accordi diplomatici. Questi utlimi sono sottoposti al voto, e non potranno essere stipulati a meno che non ci sia l’appoggio del plethos, termine la cui interpretazione ha sovente richiamato l’interesse della critica. Particolare attenzione è stata rivolta al ruolo ricoperto da Argo all’interno della controversia, da cui evidentemente dipende la corretta definizione della tipologia del testo in esame. È opinione condivisa dagli studiosi che il documento non possa considerarsi un arbitrato, come invece per diverso tempo si è pensato, dal momento che Argo è direttamente coinvolta nella stipula dei patti: essa avrebbe, quindi, ricoperto un ruolo di semplice mediatrice, in ragione del suo possibile status di metropolis delle due città cretesi, che le si sarebbero rivolte allo scopo di mettere da parte le ostilità che le dividevano e stabilire rapporti di pace. Ragion per cui, il trattato – che fornisce anche un apporto significativo alla conoscenza delle procedure degli accordi diplomatici – occupa una posizione di rilievo nello studio dei rapporti tra metropolis e apoikia e porta a rivedere l’idea, ricorrente nella storiografia, secondo la quale l’isola di Creta sarebbe rimasta, almeno nel V secolo, isolata o comunque ai margini dello scenario politico internazionale.

Traduzione
(A) coloro (che provengono) da Argo disporranno le cose sacre, i Cnossi, invece, porteranno le pelli. Prima delle Taurofonie (?), a Tilisso verrà sacrificato, in onore di Ermes (?), un agnello, e concederemo anche a Daira (?) un'agnella. Nessuna delle due parti stipulerà nuovi trattati, se ciò non sembra giusto alla maggioranza, ma gli Argivi contribuiranno con la terza parte dei voti. Se renderemo alcuni degli alleati, nemici (B) e alleati alcuni dei nemici, non si proceda se non sembra giusto alla maggioranza, e i Tilissi contribuiranno con la terza parte dei voti. Se avviene una battaglia, e una delle due parti è assente, per necessità si stipuli una tregua di cinque giorni. Se un esercito penetra nel territorio di Cnosso, i Tilissi saranno tenuti a intervenire con tutte le loro forze (C) per quanto possibile. I Cnossi forniranno cibo agli Argivi (che si trovano) a Cnosso, gli Argivi (forniranno cibo) a coloro (che si trovano) a Tilisso. Si provvederà all'esercito per trenta giorni, ma, una volta allontanato, si farà tornare l'esercito in patria. Queste stesse cose (facciano) anche i Tilissi. Se sacrifichiamo una pecora a Orthia, sarà sacrificato anche un montone ad Apollo. Se qualcuno dei Cnossi si reca ad Argo [...]

Alcuni browser (in particolare Chrome e versioni molto recenti di Firefox) non rendono correttamente un gruppo di caratteri presenti nel testo di alcune iscrizioni, per lo più arcaiche. I caratteri che possono presentare il problema sono riportati nella sottostante tabella, in cui si può immediatamente verificare il comportamento del browser in uso. Nel caso sfavorevole, infatti, nella seconda riga al posto della lettera apparirà unl'icona sempre uguale a significare l'incapacità di rappresentarla:

Le soluzioni che vi proponiamo sono le seguenti:

  • impiegare un browser che non presenti il problema (suggeriamo ad esempio IExplorer 11 o successivi per Windows; Safari per Mac);
  • installare nel vostro computer il font Cardo di David Perry. A tale scopo è necessario:
    • scaricare il font Cardo da qui;
    • installarlo nel vostro computer;
    • spuntare la casella sottostante (la scelta sarà memorizzata per le sessioni successive).
