Iscrizione dei mercenari greci ad Abu Simbel

Riassunto (massimo 650 caratteri spazi inclusi)

Sulla gamba di una delle statue colossali collocate sulla facciata del grande tempio funerario di Ramesse II ad Abu Simbel, in Nubia, Archon figlio di Amoibichos e Peleqos figlio di Eudamos, due mercenari d’Asia minore d’origine greco-caria che militavano nelle file dell’Esercito egiziano, lasciano ad imperituro ricordo del loro passaggio un’iscrizione graffita di cinque linee nella quale rievocano i dati salienti della spedizione contro le popolazioni nubiane lanciata dal sovrano della XXVI dinastia Psammetico II tra il 593 e il 592 a.C. nell’ambito di un preciso disegno mirante alla legittimazione politica e al consolidamento territoriale dell’Egitto Saitico. Il testo ci fa sapere che il sovrano si arrestò ad Elefantina mentre la flotta fluviale proseguì fin dove le condizioni di navigabilità del Nilo lo permettevano e fa riferimento a un’imprecisabile località di nome Kerkis. Sulla scorta della documentazione egiziana si ritiene che la spedizione possa aver raggiunto Napata, capitale del regno nubiano di Kush, infliggendo una pesante sconfitta ai nemici. Due generali Egiziani, Potasimto e Amasi, ben noti alla documentazione, guidavano rispettivamente il contingente autoctono e quello composto da mercenari stranieri; un ruolo di rilievo era ricoperto anche dal greco Psammetico figlio di Theokles, sicuramente un immigrato di seconda generazione. Le diverse origini dei personaggi che hanno lasciato la loro traccia in questo e negli altri graffiti sul tempio di Abu Simbel, esplicitate dalle peculiarità paleografiche e dialettali dei testi, confermano quanto possiamo apprendere anche da altre fonti, in primis Erodoto, sull’apertura dell’Egitto saitico a presenze esterne, anche organizzate in insediamenti stabili. Le ragioni di una tale accoglienza furono certo di natura economico-commerciale; ma è innegabile che per gli Egiziani un notevole vantaggio venne anche dalla possibilità di sfruttare le nuove potenzialità militari della tattica oplitica greca, contribuendo così alla diffusione di un mercenariato che poteva favorire diversi gradi di integrazione etnica e sociale.

1818-1819. Durante la spedizione in Nubia dell'esploratore britannico William John Bankes e del console Henry Salt.
Egitto, Egitto, Abu Simbel, in vista della costruzione della diga di Assuan -negli anni Sessanta del XX secolo- il monumento è stato spostato di 210 metri per evitare che venisse sommerso dalle acque e ora si trova sulla sponda occidentale del lago Nasser.

Traduzione

	Giunto il re Psammetico a Elefantina, queste cose scrissero
	coloro che navigavano con Psammetico, il figlio di Theokles,
	e arrivarono oltre Kerkis, fin dove il fiume si poteva
	risalire: Potasimto conduceva gli stranieri, mentre Amasi gli Egiziani.

Le soluzioni che vi proponiamo sono le seguenti:

impiegare un browser che non presenti il problema (suggeriamo ad esempio IExplorer 11 o successivi per Windows; Safari per Mac);
installare nel vostro computer il font Cardo di David Perry. A tale scopo è necessario:
- scaricare il font Cardo da qui;
- installarlo nel vostro computer;
- spuntare la casella sottostante (la scelta sarà memorizzata per le sessioni successive).
